Officials said the body of former professional wrestler Shad Gaspard was found by the sea shore near Venice Pier on Wednesday morning.
Los Angeles Police and the Los Angeles County Fire Department were dispatched to the area around 2:19 a.m., as gaspards were seen near the shoreline following a body match. Los Angeles police say a body found on Venice Beach belongs to former WWE wrestler Shad Gaspard, who was caught ripping while swimming with his son last week.
Gaspard's 10-year-old son Aryeh was rescued and several other swimmers pulled him out of the water safely after being trapped in high currents on Venice Beach in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.
The 39-year-old Gaspard was about 50 yards from shore when he was last seen. When last seen by the lifeguard, a wave crashed on Mr. Shad Gaspard and swept away into the ocean, Los Angeles police said in a statement on Monday. The 39-year-old Gaspard had been missing since Sunday afternoon when he drifted into the sea on Venice Beach.
On Tuesday, Gaspard’s wife, Siliana, had thanked authorities and fans in a statement.
“We would like to express our gratitude to the first responders who rescued Aryeh and to the lifeguards, Coast Guard, divers, fire and police departments for their continued efforts to help find our beloved Shad,” the statement said.
Gaspard rose to fame in WWE as half of the tag team group Crime Time, along with his partner, JTG.
After retiring in 2010, Gaspard had minor roles on TV and in films, including the 2015 Kevin Hart comedy "Get Hard".
He also worked as a bodyguard for stars such as Britney Spears and Mike Tyson prior to his wrestling career.
Actor and former wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson paid tribute to Gaspard in a tweet on Wednesday. “My prayers and hope for Shad Gaspard wife, son and family during this unthinkable time. Man, this is a tough one. A really tough one. Great guy,” he wrote.
