The two-year-old girl was reported missing from The Esplanade in Portarlington, near Geelong in southwest Melbourne, about 1pm on Thursday.

Officers searched the area and found the toddler unconscious in the water.

The little girl was pulled out of the water.

“Police commenced CPR on the child till ambulance crews arrived but unfortunately she died at the scene,” Victoria Police said in a statement.
