Earthquake in near Puerto Rico and near Greek islands amid coronavirus lockdown

Puerto Rico hit by 5.5 magnitude earthquake amid coronavirus lockdown 



Lightning in some parts was reported and damage was reported following a 5.5 magnitude earthquake on the island this morning in southern Puerto Rico.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 7:19 a.m. local time off the coast of Ponce and Peñuelas – a region that has been hit by a series of earthquakes since late 2019.

A Ponce city spokesman told The Associated Press that the second-floor balcony had collapsed, and photographs on social media showed damage in the city's colonial center.The earthquake and several aftershocks were felt in the capital, San Juan, and the island has been on lock-down since 16 March due to coronavirus.

Gov. Wanda Vázquez reminded people not to forget security precautions related to the virus if they evacuate their homes.

“To our people, stay calm,” Vázquez wrote on Twitter. “We’re ready for any emergency. If your structure is damaged, you should leave with your mask and your emergency backpack.”

Puerto Rico's power authority said the shiver had closed its eco electric power plant, but the agency said there were no signs of damage at Guayabal and Guajataca Dam.


5.9-magnitude tremor hits near Greek island



The European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC) said a 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the Mediterranean Sea south of the Greek island of Crete.

According to EMSC, the earthquake hit a depth of 10 km (6 mi) on Saturday afternoon.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute said that the epicenter of the earthquake was 55 km south of the city of Erapatra, Crete.  Police, fire brigade and civil security officials said there was no immediate report of any casualties or damage.
