Poisonous gas leaks into LG polymer near Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh

Visakhapatnam: Tragedy struck Andhra Pradesh early on Thursday as gas leaked from a chemical unit in the city, leaving one minor among 10 people dead, more than 70 left unconscious, with at least five sleeping hamlets affected unaware as most were still in bed. At least ten people were killed and around thousands fell sick in a gas leak incident that took place at the LG Polymer plant at Gopalapatnam on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam in the early hours of Thursday. The gas reportedly started leaking around 2:30 am when the workers were preparing to reopen the plant today.
In scenes reminiscent of the 1984 Bhopal gas tragedy, the streets and hospitals of Visakhapatnam were filled with people in panic, fearful of breathing and unable to thwart the silent tragedy that struck them.

According to Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation officials, the tragedy occurred when the chemical unit that was shut down due to the lockdown was restarted on Thursday morning. The gas stored in the tanks started leaking and spread over a radius of 3 km. Authorities zeroed in on two gases, styrene and pentine, as possible causes of the crash.
All unconscious people and those with difficulty breathing have been admitted to the city's King George Hospital. A KGH official said the death toll was likely to increase. The doctor said that children under 10 were the most affected. Visakhapatnam police commissioner Rajiv Kumar Meena told The Indian Express that four people died while breathing with gas, while two died in an accident.
