Moesha and Sister, Sister Among Classic Black Sitcoms Coming to Netflix Acquires Rights to 7 Black Sitcoms Including


Netflix’s latest acquisition spree includes a splash of sibling synchronicity. 

Netflix has raided the former UPN network’s library, acquiring the rights to seven popular Black sitcoms, which will begin rolling out this weekend.

The streaming service on Wednesday announced that that it has acquired the rights to seven classic Black sitcoms, including ’90s hits Sister, Sister and Moesha. Additional titles include Girlfriends, Half & Half, The Parkers, One and One and the first three seasons of The Game. 

The streaming service has grabbed the rights to “Moesha,” “Sister, Sister,” “The Game,” “Girlfriends,” “The Parkers,” “Half & Half” and “One on One.” “Moesha,” which starred Brandy Norwood and ran for six seasons on UPN, will debut on Netflix Saturday. The first three seasons of “The Game,” which ran for nine years in total, will debut on Aug. 15. Netflix acquired the three seasons of the black comedy that aired on The CW, before it moved over to BET.


The announcement included a video featuring nearly 30 former cast members from all seven shows, including Tia Mowry, Tamera Mowry-Housley, Jackée Harry and Tim Reid (Sister, Sister); Shar Jackson, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Marcus T. Paulk (Moesha); Pooch Hall, Brittany Daniel, Wendy Raquel Robinson and Coby Bell (The Game); Tracee Ellis Ross, Jill Marie Jones, Persia White, Golden Brooks and Reggie Hayes (Girlfriends); Essence Atkins, Rachel True, Chico Benton and Valarie Pettiford (Half & Half); Flex Alexander, Robert Ri’chard, Sicily Johnson and Kelly Perine (One on One); and Jenna Von Oy, Ken Lawson and Dorien Wilson (The Parkers).

Popular ’90s sitcom, “Sister, Sister” will debut on Netflix starting Sept. 1. The series began on ABC before moving over to The WB, airing six seasons total. “Girlfriends,” which stars “black-ish” lead Tracee Ellis-Ross, ran for 9 seasons and 172 episodes and is one of the longer running live action sitcoms.

Up until now, most of the above series have not been available to stream, at least not in their entirety. Half & Half, Moesha, One on One, The Parkers and Sister, Sister are not available at all, while only select episodes of Girlfriends and the complete nine-season run of The Game are available via CW Seed (with commercials).

“The Parkers,” “Half & Half” and “One on One” will debut in October. “The Parkers” was a spinoff of “Moesha” that starred Monique. All three of those series aired on UPN as well.
