Former Haryana MLA and Arya Samaj Leader Swami Agnivesh Dies At 80 After Multi-organ Failure

Swami Agnivesh, who was famous for his outspoken comments on social issues, was elected MLA in 1977 Haryana Legislative Assembly.
Swami Agnivesh, who was the Education Minister of Haryana, has passed away, he was 81 years old. Swami Agnivesh was the prominent face of the Arya Samaj, known for its opinions on social issues. Agnivesh suffering from liver cirrhosis had stopped functioning by several major organs.
Swami Agnivesh Death, a social worker and iconic figure of Arya Samaj, has passed away. He breathed his last at a hospital in Delhi on Friday evening. Swami Agnivesh was admitted to the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) in New Delhi on Monday. Confirming the death of Swami Agnivesh, ILBS said, 'Swami Agnivesh had a cardiac arrest at 6 pm on Friday. Efforts were made to save them, but this was not possible. He breathed his last at 6.30 pm.
Former Haryana MLA and Arya Samaj leader Swami Agnivesh, who was hospitalised due to liver cirrhosis and was in a critical condition, died at a hospital in New Delhi.
The 80-year-old social activist was admitted at the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences in New Delhi and was on ventilator since Tuesday due to multi-organ failure.
Agnivesh founded a political party, Arya Sabha, that was based on the principles of the Arya Samaj in 1970. He was also an advocate for the dialogue between religions.
He was involved in various areas of social activism including campaigns against female foeticide and the emancipation of women.
Mourning the loss of the leader, activist lawyer Prashant Bhushan said, "The demise of Swami Agnivesh is a huge tragedy. A true warrior for humanity and tolerance. Among the bravest that I knew, willing to take huge risks for public good.Was brutalised in Jharkhand by a BJP/RSS lynch mob 2 yrs ago. Liver got damaged. RIP Agnivesh ji."
Agnivesh, who is suffering from liver cirrhosis, was put on ventilator since Tuesday when several major organs stopped functioning. A team of senior doctors of the hospital was keeping a close watch on his condition, but he could not be saved.
Swami Agnivesh's Facebook page said that Swami Agnivesh, the revolutionary leader of the Arya Samaj, died today. He was 81. His body will be kept at the office of 7 Jantar-Mantar Road, New Delhi on Saturday morning from 11 am to 2 pm. His last rites will be performed at 4 o'clock in Vedic manner at Agnilok Ashram, Bahalpa District Gurugram.
Born on September 21, 1939, Swami Agnivesh was known for his outspoken comments on social issues. A political party named Arya Sabha was formed in 1970. In 1977, he was elected MLA in Haryana Legislative Assembly and also served as Education Minister in Haryana Government. In 1981, he founded an organization called Bandhu Mukti Morcha.
Swami Agnivesh also participated in the anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare in 2011. However, he later withdrew from the movement due to differences. Swami Agnivesh also took part in the reality show Bigg Boss. He also stayed at Bigg Boss house for three days from 8 to 11 November.
