As Mumbai came to standstill after a grid failure caused a major power outage across the megapolis on Monday, Hindi cine personalities including megastar Amitabh Bachchan, actor Nimrat Kaur and filmmaker Kunal Kohli urged people to stay calm.

Maharashtra's Power Minister Nitin Raut said the electricity supply in Mumbai was interrupted around 10 am during maintenance and repair work at Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company's 400 kv Kalwa-Padgha centre.

Bachchan, who celebrated his 78th birthday on Sunday, was one of the first celebrities to react on the power outage in the city.

In a Twitter post, Raut said the Kalwa-Padgha transmission line tripped, leading to power outages in Thane, Palghar and Navi Mumbai. "Consequently, cascading the power failure to Mumbai-Thane & Mumbai suburban city. It will be restored in approximately an hour," he tweeted.

Veteran actor Anupam Kher and music composer Armaan Malik also shared their concerns over the power outage.

The power supply in Mumbai will be fully restored in an hour, said a source.

The source also said that POSOCO has already charged up many electricity supply lines of the city and its suburbs.

The power outage was mainly because of a failure in the state grid and the city is supplied electricity under islanding system, the source told PTI.

Under islanding system, an area is supplied electricity in such a way that it is insulated from any grid failure or other technical issues happening outside that.

Power Grid Corporation Ltd has no role to play as its main inter-state transmission lines were working perfectly, the source added.

Large parts of Mumbai and its suburbs faced a power failure due to which several trains have been held up.

Traffic signals in some areas were also not working.

A senior railway official in Mumbai told local ANI news agency that trains on the city’s Harbour Line had resumed while they were trying to restore services on others.

A grid failure has caused a widespread power outage in India’s financial capital, Mumbai, and surrounding areas, authorities said.

“Power cut across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region due to grid failure,” the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) agency said on Twitter on Monday.

The rare occurrence disrupted train services in the city of 20 million. Mumbai’s intra-city and suburban trains are used by more than seven million commuters on normal days.

The official added that long-distance trains from Mumbai had been rescheduled.

A government official in Mumbai said other power suppliers such as Adani Power Ltd and Tata Power had also been affected by the outage.

Tata Power said there was “simultaneous substation tripping” at 10:10 am (04:40 GMT), “causing a huge dip in frequency in Mumbai transmission system which led to tripping of power supply”.

Meanwhile, India’s two main stock exchanges, the National Stock Exchange and the Bombay Stock Exchange, as well Mumbai’s international airport, said they were operating normally.

The local municipal bodies announced helpline numbers for the residents to call in case of emergencies.
