American basketball player Curly' Neal, Harlem Globetrotters legend, dies at 77
We've got sad news for Harlem Globetrotters fans / followers. The beloved globetrotter legend Fred "Curly" Neil has passed away. He was 77.
I've lost one of the most known real humans in the world so far, Globetrotters GM Jeff Munn said to a statement on Curley's demise. she added
“His basketball skill was unrivaled by most, and his warm heart and huge smile brought joy to families worldwide. He always made time for his many fans and inspired millions.”
During his 22-year tenure, Curley became one of the team's most recognizable players ... playing in over 6,000 games.
Neil's 22 jersey was retired in 2008 ... one of only 5 players to receive the honor.
Curly was also featured in several of the Globetrotters TV specials ... including "Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island" and "Harlem Globetrotters Popcorn Special" ... as well as 'Scooby Doo'.
Johnson C. Smith was an elite bowler for the Curly team after a successful career at University ... where he played a 23-point game.
Fellow Globetrotters legend Curly Bob Johnson mourned the loss of his friend on Twitter, stating, A true ambassador of the game of world basketball last night and one of the most recognizable faces on the planet outside of Muhammad Ali lost!
